AT THE OAKS

FITNESS ACTIVITY PLANNING

Fitness activities at The Oaks are designed to increase flexibility, burn fat, condition the heart and lungs, and tone your body. You may participate in as many classes as you wish. We do recommend that you consult with our nurse prior to participating in our program, especially if you are new to fitness activity.

To assist you in planning your fitness day, we suggest that you participate in at least one daily stretch class, one daily cardiovascular activity, and a resistance training activity every other day. Each of these types of exercise benefits the body in different ways, and you need to combine all three types for a complete program and best results.

BE SMART! TRAIN AT THE PROPER INTENSITY!

Many activities at The Oaks are suitable for all fitness levels. Our instructors are prepared to lead you at the proper intensity for your current ability and encourage you to listen to your body.

Our schedule of activities changes seasonally - you will receive a current schedule of classes and times upon arrival.  Click here to see a sample schedule.

Following are some of the types of activities currently offered.

DIRECTORY OF FITNESS ACTIVITIES

**Advanced Mountain Hike   A vigorous 6.5 - 8 mile hike in the foothill terrain of The Ojai Valley. For guests with advanced fitness levels. Sign up at front desk required. Recommended for guests who have successfully completed the Brisk Walk or Mini Hike.   (1.5- 2 hours)

Ball Stretch    Use the stability balls for a well rounded (!) morning stretch to beat the 9 am crowd.

**Brisk Walk   A three mile brisk pace for Intermediate Level Walkers. Great cardiovascular benefits. Ojai is beautiful in the morning! Leaders sets a 15-17 minute mile pace. (1 hour)

**Cardio    Achieve your cardiovascular capacity with varying daily offerings that include step, circuit training, hoops, dance, or classic aerobics. (Class type is SUBJECT TO CHANGE!!) (50 min.)

Healthy Backs    Improve the strength and range of motion of your lower back. (40 min.)

Mind-Body Awareness    Stretch and refresh your body and mind with range of motion movements to melt away stress and tension.   With Sheila*, learn her vigorous 5 minutes of fitness!   Reconnect your mind and body with this Oaks’ landmark class! (50 min.)

**Mini-Mountain Hike    A brisk 4 mile hike in the foothill terrain of The Ojai Valley. Designed for guests with intermediate fitness levels.   Unsure of your fitness level? Try a Brisk Walk first. Spectacular views. (90 min.) (NOTE: Saturday hike is a “mini” with an option to extend to an advanced hike)

Morning Stroll    A gently paced 30 min stroll around town.

**Muscle Conditioning   Strengthen your muscles, boost your metabolism, and build your bones working with free weights and other strength tools.   One through ten-pound hand weights available to accommodate all fitness levels. (45 min.)

**On the Ball    Stretch, strengthen and have a ball on our stability balls designed to build and lengthen muscles, increase balance, and increase flexibility. (45 min)

**Pilates Inspired Mat Class   Strengthen and lengthen your core muscles without machines.   (This intermediate class will offer some modifications for beginners)!   (45 min.)

A relaxing yoga class is the perfect way to end your spa dayQi Gong   This ancient art of calming, flowing movement combines breath with motion. (40 min)

Relax with Stretch and Yoga   Relaxing gentle stretches and yoga techniques restfully conclude your day. Sorry, no late arrival! (50 min.)

Roller Blading   Learn how to have fun and get fit too!   Instruction, safety and equipment in this class suitable for all levels.   SIGN UP REQUIRED!   See Desk (90 – 120 min.)

**Simple Step   The basic Step moves at the cardiovascular intensity that suits you. (45 min.)

S.P.A. Dance    Lift your spirits with a variety of creative dance styles including Jazz, Belly, Funk, African, SPAcifically for you!   (Some classes cardio) (45-50 min.)

Tai Chi    This ancient Chinese discipline blends motion, breath, and poetic precision. (Eat after) (40 min)

**Top to Bottom Toning   Improve your strength using the stability ball and fitness tubes.   For home use you can purchase Top to Bottom Kits at the Nest and achieve your fitness strength goals! (50 min.)

Twinges and Hinges   This water class is perfect for those with challenging hips, knees, or lower backs.   Great for balance, strength, and abs too!  (60 min.)

Water Works   Improve your cardio capacity, strength, and flexibility in this wet and wild favorite class for every body!   (45 min. at 11:15 am daily, 60 min. at 8:00 am M-W-F)

Weight Room Circuit   Let an Oaks Trainer show you how our Cardio and Weight Machines work, as you do a combined Cardio and Strength workout! (50 min)

Yoga Essentials   The basics of yoga to improve your flexibility, strength, and range of motion.   Basic yoga experience helpful.   Please, no late arrival (wait and eat at 9a m!)   (40 min.)

**Yoga for Strength   Active postures, at an intermediate pace to enhance strength, balance and alignment.   Yoga experience strongly suggested. Please, no late arrival.
(45-50 min.)

**Yoga Ropes   This intermidiate and Fun workout is only suitable for those with Strong Shoulders! Space is Limited, so please BE ON TIME! (40 min)

Your Fitness Prescription   Lecture on how to balance the fitness disciplines, safely optimize your stay at The Oaks, and take your new habits back home!

**These Intermediate level classes are not suitable for true beginners. For those with a higher level of fitness, please be willing to attend multiple classes for an accumulated cardio/strength experience!   Classes are geared to accommodate most fitness levels and to keep our average guest busy and safe! High Intermediate/Advanced Levels – Grab a pass to the Athletic Club for Spinning, Lap Swimming, or advanced Vinyasa Yoga-   ($5 daily charge) See the Front Desk for their schedule!!
